Illustrator Sara Barkat Featured on Substack
Sara Barkat, illustrator of The Yellow Wall-Paper: A Graphic Novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and a children’s book The Midnight Ball (a title that received a Mom’s Choice Gold Award) has been featured by Substack in their latest Substack Reads (scroll to bottom of post).
Her comic In Boxes was reprinted by Substack, and she received a “Featured Publication” badge to display at The Sadbook Collections, where you can discover similar comics that find humor, whimsy, or philosophy in simple images and situations.
What Is Substack?
Substack is self-described as “a new economic engine for culture.”
Or, as Neil Patel explains, “In 2017, Substack took the market by storm by allowing creatives, journalists, and bloggers to make money from their own email newsletters. Substack provides a way to build an email marketing list, write newsletters, charge subscribers, and manage payments.”
The Guardian further notes that “Substack has offered grants to authors—including six figure sums for major writers” to encourage them to publish via the platform.
The Sadbook Collections is not major at the moment. And those six-figure promises are mostly for writers in the political and financial spheres. But you can subscribe to receive an almost-daily comic and, if you choose, offer a small monthly payment of $5—for which you’ll get a morning smile with your morning tea or coffee. We highly recommend.
Poetry Prompt: Small Smiles
Write a poem about anything that gives you a small smile. It can be an object in your home or a sight outside. (Yesterday, for instance, we saw a baby turtle hop off a branch and plop into a pond. That tiny moment in nature really made us smile! 🙂 )

Completely delighted for Sara! Happy too for all the other readers that may get to read her comic because of the opportunity! (And the thought of your baby turtle’s splash made me smile. Thanks!)
Cheers!

Gosh, that baby turtle was such a sweet surprise. We hadn’t seen him sitting there underneath his mama’s shadow. Then, suddenly, they both were off. And he was SO cute!!! 🙂

Mr. Skink
You always think
that you will get away
quick as a wink
But I saw you again
yesterday on the deck
last week by the patio
and I bet I’ll see you anon – yet;)
L.L. Barkat says
a wink and a smile! 🙂
fun, Katie.
