“You’ll never find a pearl like this”
though, there was that diamond found
in an inherited paperclip box
the stuff of family lore
that now sits
solitare
in a band
on the finger of your hand.
Bethany R. says
Ingriguing—makes me want to know more. Love the concrete detail of the “inherited paperclip box.”

Thank you for reading and taking time to comment, Bethany.

A Pearl Like This
“The way to love anything is to realize that it may be lost.”
– G.K. Chesterton
See this pearl? No, I know you don’t. Don’t know
how good you have it, gorgeous priceless smooth
pearl right there in your hand, scrubbed fingers
closed up on it so tight. No wonder you can’t
even see it. Clenched it over and forgot you had it
in your palm all along. Better open up your grip, take a good
long stare. See that pearl now? Could be you’ll never
see it again.

Not sure I put any cream and sugar in that one, but anyway. 🙂

I like the commanding presence of the voice. It feels scary movie narrator like to me. Seasonally appropriate. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your poem here, Monica! 🙂
(My son and I have been enjoying a book of Chesterton’s Father Brown mysteries lately—clever fun. 😉

We watch Father Brown at our house too! My mother recommended it and because, well, Mr. Weasley is a favorite character as well.
