We’ve heard that coloring pages can be a good way to alleviate stress. And of course, we know that poetry is also a fine way to reduce stress. So what could be better than putting the two together? This year, we’re introducing a series of fun Coloring Page Poems that you can print, color, and doodle your way to relaxation and stress relief. Today, we offer “Piano” by D. H. Lawrence.
Piano by D.H. Lawrence Coloring Page Poem
Piano
Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide.
So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.
—D. H. Lawrence

How to Write a Poem uses images like the buzz, the switch, the wave—from the Billy Collins poem “Introduction to Poetry”—to guide writers into new ways of writing poems. Excellent teaching tool. Anthology and prompts included.
“How to Write a Poem is a classroom must-have.”

I love this poem and the way you drew Lawrence, adult and child, so close together on the page. Sweet. Thank you for sharing – I’m kind of wrapped up in thoughts of memories these days, which isn’t exactly the same as memories, but still – this poem fits just right into my brain today. 🙂

Thanks, Donna. 🙂 This was a fun one to do.

Love it! At my desk, when I’m stuck or want to access the collective unconscious, I sketch or doodle, but lately I’ve been doing just this–coloring. Thanks for this. I can move on from Ryan Gosling, in poetic purple attire. 🙂

Keys to color and music to remember!
Sharon Warner says
Thank you so much for this poem and picture to color. Children visiting the D. H. Lawrence Ranch will enjoy reading the poem and coloring the picture! I was going to create something like this for child visitors, but you’ve done it for me.
Best,
Sharon O. Warner
