Recently, we published the delightfully unusual music video In Love With Saskia Hamilton. If you haven’t viewed it yet, you really need to do so. It’s based on the Ben Folds/Nick Hornby song that… um… is a tribute of sorts to poet Saskia Hamilton.
If you haven’t viewed the video yet, maybe this brief Twitter conversation between us and Editor John Wilson of Books & Culture will pique your interest. Video aside, we thought John’s words were a wonderful expression of what it is to be a reader in love with a writer.
Here’s the Twitter conversation, in reverse order, since otherwise you’d have to read it from the bottom to the top to get the correct sequence…

John, I have thought about this conversation again and again. Each time changing my mind. 🙂
Would I really want a video like this done with my name? No. Would I? Yes. Am I sure? Maybe, maybe not.
Yet, each of us who become public people through the writing process do deal with these possibilities in myriad ways. The expectations of readers, their love and sometimes their disillusionment. Fan letters, overzealous Facebook followers, fawning reviews (or scathing ones).
Just thinking out loud. And thinking, too, about the paradox that some of us writers/poets are so private, yet we cannot really hope to be private if we publish.
